Archival Trainee (Archivreferendariat)
About the role
Traineeship program at the Staatsarchiv Hamburg, a modern state and municipal archive preserving Hamburg's cultural heritage. The program prepares trainees for leadership responsibility, managing complex tasks, shaping modernization processes, and combining archival, historical, and legal expertise in archive management. Structure includes practical study periods at the Staatsarchiv (6 months) and a Hamburg authority (2 months), specialized studies at the Archivschule Marburg (12 months), a transfer phase for thesis writing (3 months), and an exam phase (1 month).
Requirements
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in History or Law, with at least a satisfactory grade in a legal history seminar paper
- Eligible for civil servant status (per §7 Beamtenstatusgesetz)
- Under 40 years old as of May 1, 2027
- Knowledge of two foreign languages, including Latin or French (min. 3 years of school instruction or equivalent)
- Nice to have: experience taking on responsibility (volunteer, civic, or professional)
- Nice to have: strong communication/collaboration skills
- Nice to have: some practical archival experience
- Nice to have: demonstrated independent historical research skills
