Archival Traineeship (Archivreferendariat)
About the role
The Staatsarchiv Hamburg is offering a traineeship program (Archivreferendariat) that combines practical study periods at the Staatsarchiv and a Hamburg authority with specialized studies at the Archivschule Marburg. The program prepares participants for leadership roles in archive management, including managing complex tasks, shaping modernization processes, and combining archival, historical, and legal expertise.
Requirements
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in History or Law, with at least a 'satisfactory' grade in a legal history seminar paper
- Eligible for civil servant status (per §7 Beamtenstatusgesetz)
- Under 40 years old as of May 1, 2027
- Knowledge of two foreign languages, including Latin or French (min. 3 years of school instruction or equivalent)
- Nice to have: experience taking on responsibility (volunteer, civic, or professional), strong communication/collaboration skills, some practical archival experience, demonstrated independent historical research skills
